Day trips run all year, so the question is less "can I go" than "what will I see". The falls, the roads, the sequoia walk and the air all depend on the month.

The quick answer
For waterfalls, go from about April to June, when the snowmelt peaks. Summer brings full roads and heat on the drive; by August Yosemite Falls is often a trickle, and in late September 2026 it was dry. Autumn can bring wildfire smoke. From October to April, snow is possible, chains may be required and the sequoia walk can be dropped.
When is the best time to visit Yosemite?
Late April to June, for full waterfalls, green meadows and all the Valley roads open; September is calmer but the falls are dry.
If waterfalls matter to you, spring is the only real answer. If you mainly want Tunnel View, El Capitan and a walk in the Valley, any month works on a day trip.

When are the Yosemite waterfalls at their best?
From about April to June, with the spring snowmelt: Yosemite Falls, 2,425 feet from top to the Valley floor, is at full roar.
By August it is often only a trickle, and on September 27, 2026 the park listed Yosemite Falls as dry, with Vernal, Nevada and Bridalveil falls low. Guests on late-summer tours sometimes feel let down by the falls, so set expectations by the month.
When is Yosemite most crowded?
Summer and holiday weekends are the busiest, and with no reservation system in 2026 there is no cap on day visitors.
On a tour, the crowds matter less: you do not look for parking, and the bus goes straight to the viewpoints. For quieter paths, go midweek, or in spring before the school holidays.
How hot is Yosemite in summer?
The Valley is warm, and the drive through the Central Valley can pass 90°F; mornings in the park are much cooler than San Francisco.
Wear layers and bring water. Guests on summer tours mention 100-degree afternoons and, on a few buses, air conditioning that could not keep up.

Yes for snowy granite and quiet viewpoints, with caveats: chains may be required from October to April, and tours can drop the sequoia walk.
Glacier Point Road and Tioga Road close for the snow season; in 2026 they reopened on May 9 and May 15. In February, the Firefall on Horsetail Fall draws photographers, and no reservation is needed for it in 2026.
What about wildfire smoke?
Late summer and autumn are fire season: smoke can drift into the Valley, and roads can close for firefighting.
In late September 2026, the Dome Fire, burning in wilderness northeast of Wawona, closed Glacier Point Road and brought periods of air that was unhealthy for sensitive groups to Yosemite Valley. The park stayed open and the day trips ran. Check the NPS conditions page before you go; day trips cancel free up to 24 hours before.

Open and quieter, with dry or low waterfalls and Glacier Point Road closed because of the Dome Fire, as of late September 2026.
On September 27, 2026 the park reported Yosemite Falls dry, Tioga Road open with short delays, and the Mist Trail on limited hours through October. None of that stops a day trip, which stays in the Valley and does not go to Glacier Point. For the best chance of the falls, look at next April to June.
